MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
Dear LifeMed Alaska Team,
As we transition from fall to winter, I want to emphasize the importance of safety in the months ahead. Alaska’s winter conditions are harsh, and it is crucial that we all take extra precautions to ensure the well-being of ourselves and our colleagues. This means conducting thorough gear checks, being prepared for extreme cold, and paying close attention to our health during the cold and flu season. If you are feeling unwell, it is important to take the necessary time to recover and to be mindful of the potential impact on your colleagues.
Our work at LifeMed Alaska requires careful preparation and a continued focus on safety. Please make sure to use traction devices when necessary, stay vigilant for signs of frostbite or hypothermia, and take the necessary steps to stay healthy.
Thank you for your continued dedication to being safe and to our mission of providing exceptional and compassionate care.
Stay safe and healthy,
American Heart Association CEO Roundtable:
Grace had the honor to participate in two CEO roundtable meetings, which featured a notable guest speaker, Dr. Edwardo Sanchez, the Chief Medical Officer for Prevention at the American Heart Association (AHA) at the national level. Grace was in esteemed company, with other leaders from the healthcare community and Alaska Native Corporations in attendance.
The primary aim of these meetings was to provide a platform for high-level discussions on the integration of healthcare in the workplace. During the discussions, Grace had the opportunity to share information about the AHA’s campaign, “A Nation of Lifesavers.” This significant initiative strives to ensure that at least one individual in every household is certified in hands-only CPR.
We are excited to announce that LifeMed Alaska is leading the charge as the first business partner in Alaska to support this AHA initiative. Our team is currently working diligently to develop and implement plans to roll out this lifesaving training across the entire state of Alaska, reinforcing our commitment to enhancing community health and safety.
Interesting transport:
We have some upcoming events, watch for emails from Shannon for opportunities to represent LifeMed Alaska!
Different patient needs require different transport options. This month the Kodiak team joined the Coast Guard on a joint effort to transport a patient from Bethel to Anchorage.
ROTOR TEAMS:
It’s always a party at Providence when both helicopters meet on the helipad. As we close out October we conclude our busy summer season.
Our Wolf Lake base was recently toured by a representative of the Alaska Railroad. Our helicopters are the first call for the Alaska Railroad in the event of a large-scale incident or in the event that one of the railroad workers need a medevac.
NEW Ambulance:
We are excited to unveil our newest ambulance, an enhancement to our fleet that combines familiar design with advanced internal features. Manufactured by Osage Ambulances, this vehicle stands out with increased insulation for a steadier, quieter operation, without compromising on quality. Externally consistent with our existing fleet, including a new front brush guard, the interior boasts a standard cabinet layout, supplemented with innovative additions such as a trial IV fluid warmer and an easily maintainable, customizable electrical system. Currently undergoing final preparations, by the time you read this, this ambulance will be ready or close to ready to serve!
Community Engagement:
Visit to IGIGUIG
Proactively engaging with rural communities, even outside of emergencies, is crucial to fulfilling our mission of community leadership. During a recent visit to Igiguig, we had the opportunity to connect with community members Alex, Anna, and Tonya Salmon. It was a valuable experience where we learned about their healthcare needs and access. We are thankful for the insights gained and the warm welcome received.
YKHC Meeting:
YKHC Board Update: On October 18th, Grace represented our team at the YKHC board meeting, sharing valuable updates and engaging in meaningful dialogue. Remarkably, every board member or their family has directly experienced the services of LifeMed Alaska, underscoring our integral role in the community. The board expressed genuine appreciation for our team’s dedication to safety and our strong community ties. This interaction was a heartfelt affirmation of our commitment to serving rural and western Alaska, aligning seamlessly with our core values of safety, sustainability, and community leadership.
IT News:
Kick Off Meeting with ConnectedIT
We recently met with ConnectedIT to initiate a full assessment of our IT systems, encompassing software, hardware, and cybersecurity. This is part of the company’s initiative, aimed at strengthening our internal and external communications. We will keep you updated on the progress and improvements made through this important initiative.
Search and Assist:
The Soldotna base was involved in a search and assist near Seward involving 5 stranded hunters. Amahra, Dan and Mandy thoughtfully planned the mission. Knowing they could only transport one or two patients at a time; they brought in sleeping bags and blankets for those who had to wait at the scene for the helicopter to return. Multiple hunters were treated for hypothermia, but with the assistance of the Soldotna team they were all transported to safety.
